baptism basics

 1. DOES BAPTISM MAKE ME A CHRISTIAN?

The short answer here is quite simply: no.

Baptism does not make you a Christian, anymore than a wedding ring makes you married. Baptism - like a wedding ring - is an outward symbol of an inward decision.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

2. WHAT DOES BAPTISM SYMBOLIZE?

Going under the water shows: My old life has been buried with Christ. Under the water shows: I am now dead to sin's control and completely forgiven. Coming out of the water shows: I am raised & empowered to live a new life in Christ.

“For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.” Colossians 2:12

3. WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?

You should be baptized to obey Jesus & follow His example.

"At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan." Mark 1:9

“Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20

You should be baptized to declare your faith to others.

"Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16
